Appraisal can often be forgotten, in the hustle and bustle
of the day's activity, and for some teachers be the most problematic
activity to approach.
It
is in fact, one of the most important parts of the process.
Success or failure, is to a certain extent subjective. In
all cases comments should be kept to the ' level of success'
either of the making process, or the end result.
During
the drawing experience children were asked throughout to comment
on the quality of materials used. At the end of each workshop,
work was laid out and considered. Pupils were asked to identify
those elements in the work that they thought successful, and
justify their selection. Pupils were also given opportunities
to share ideas and discuss improvements.
Also,
opportunities were made throughout each session to allow time
for individual and group discussion and appraisal, creating
an atmosphere in which constructive criticism was seen as
a valued part of the experience.
In
all instances comments were constructive, and observations
relevant and mature. The appraisal or feedback sessions should
be a time for celebration.
