Alex Allpress has been working on a farm in the Fenlands in Cambridgeshire. He is inspired by the deep nourished colours of the turned fields and the endless enormous sunsets. The Fens are unique with a history and character all of their own.Once an inhospitable swampy wilderness, the Fens has been tamed to leave us today with a network of intricate waterways, which are renown as some of Britain's most atmospheric and tranquil. His original ceramic art has a feel all of it's own from this unique studio setting.

The clay I use is a mixture of a white stoneware clay, and camberwell buff, which is a grogged clay, which will give the clay extra strength.
My techniques in glazing are very simple. The whole idea is to keep my work looking organic, so while the pots are in the kiln they have a kind of life of their own. So until I open the kiln door I won't entirely be sure how they're going to look.

Most of my childhood was spent outdoors playing on the family farm. To many people, the fens can be a bleak flat place to be; but I think it’s a stunningly beautiful place. From the bright yellow and green colours of spring which you can see for miles, to the bright blue skies and golden fields of summer.Even in the winter when a blanket of snow has fallen the sight can be awe inspiring. One of the real specialities of the fens is it’s sunsets. With vast skies the sunsets are huge, with bright reds, yellows and oranges filling the space.

Nature is a big part of my life. I'm trying to capture the essence of life and growth that is all around me.In a way he is letting nature take its course. For further inquires or commissions From the window of my studio, I’m looking over an old gravel pit, which over the years has turned into a beautiful natural area, where nature has reclaimed something that was just a hole in the ground, but is now a pond with life in it.
