GERALDUS
JOHN
Artist
|
Geraldus
John trained as a chemical engineer and spent his working life
in industry. He received no formal art training but has painted
for many years. This industrial experience has exerted a strong
influence on his work, much of which examines the relationship
of man and his environment- especially his workplace and home.

John
paints in oils and is interested in the effect of industrial
development and decay on the landscape and its people. Regeneration
of industry is an important element of his work with the
new modern industrial images mingling with the more familiar
industrial shapes of the late 19th and early 20th century.
Throughout
his work he tends to disregard familiar forms and ingrained
ideas in work which is often bold and uncompromising. Colours
can be strong and exercised over a wide tonal range in an
endeavour to forge a link between objects which often bear
little relationship to each other. This is illustrated in
his series of constructions entitled 'Genesis', in which
the relationship between industrial decay and regeneration
is assessed in detail.
|
| Geraldus
has also found inspiration in the images created in literary
works of the more imaginary authors such as Dylan Thomas, James
Joyce and in the mythological works of Homer. |
|
The main influences
on his work have been the moody romantic paintings of John
Piper and the heavy monumental sadness of Josef Herman.
He was born in Neath in South Wales and has his studio in
Sully near Cardiff and is a member of the Vale of Glamorgan
Artists Group.
