Statement:
"I find illustrating children's
books constantly rewarding and enjoy the level of creative input
it allows me.
I try to capture a mood and style and to create interpretations
of the characters and situations that I hope will appeal to children's
imaginations."

Stephen
Daniels was born in Mid Glamorgan in 1961.
His early life was spent immersed in drawing, encouraged
by his supportive family.
His early influences were animation films, the work of comic
book artists such as Carmine Infantino, Neil Adams and Jack
Kirby, the fantasy art of Virgil Finlay and Ralph McQuarrie.
The film posters of Bob Peak and Robert McGinnis also had
a great influence on his work.
From
1979 - 1982 Daniels studied Two-dimensional design at Cardiff
College of Art, specialising in illustration in the final
year. Upon completion of the course he moved to London,
where he worked as a freelance illustrator for the next
eight years.
|
| During
his time in London Daniels had the opportunity to extend and
improve his skills by working for various advertising and design
agencies and publishing houses. He developed a number of styles
in different media including watercolour, gouache, ink and magic
marker, for magazine and newspaper adverts, food packaging,
corporate brochures, greetings cards, storyboards, visual's,
video covers and books. |
|
Illustrations for
the RANK and CANNON film organisations, and
his involvement in the launch of several DISNEY videos
helped place the emphasis of his work on children's illustration.
Daniels also worked on the HIPPOTOT's characters and
illustrated books with the TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLE
characters.
Since returning
to South Wales in 1990 Daniels has enjoyed working on many
children's books for the Welsh Joint Education Committee,
and for the B.B.C. Wales and the Welsh Books Council.
"One
of my favourite parts of illustrating is researching the subject
matter and any background material required for each book,
which leads me to find out about things I might not otherwise
have considered. At this stage I begin conjuring images in
my mind, doodling,

sketching
and generally developing characters and compositions before
moving on to the finished illustration. I have always been
interested in comics and their artwork and several of the
commissions I've received have allowed me to explore this
format."

Stephen Daniels is currently working on personal projects writing
and illustrating his own children's story and creating pictures
of local landmark buildings such as Cardiff Castle and Llandaff
Cathedral in line and wash.
Current experiments with acrylic paint will also produce a more
impressionistic interpretation to these subjects.
